What is Kyoto Protocol?

  • The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in 1997 and became effective in 2005.

  • It was the first international convention to set targets for emissions of the main Green House Gas(GHG).

  • The protocol's first commitment period began in 2008 and ended in 2012, but subsequently extended to 2020.

  • the Kyoto Protocol operationalizes the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by committing industrialized countries and economies in transition to limit and reduce GHG emissions in accordance with agreed individual targets.
